A cloud migration checklist for Malaysian businesses
Changing hosting is a business change as well as a technical one. A website may depend on email delivery, a database, uploaded files and external services that are easy to overlook. Use this checklist to prepare a migration discussion and define what must keep working before changing production traffic.
Inventory what the application depends on
List the website, application runtime, database, uploads, scheduled jobs, email provider, DNS records and external integrations. Identify who controls each account. Record configuration names and access owners in secure operational documentation; do not place passwords or keys in a project brief. Include systems that receive webhooks or rely on an allowlisted IP address.
Define access and data requirements
Confirm who needs administrative access and how it will be revoked when roles change. Discuss hosting location, customer requirements and which data a provider processes. Agree encryption, logging and retention settings with the people responsible for the data. A server region alone does not answer every contractual or data handling question.
Test recovery before the move
Take a backup of the database and files, then test restoring them in a separate environment. Agree how much data loss and downtime the business can tolerate. Identify who can authorise rollback and what evidence will trigger it. Keep the old environment available during the agreed transition period.
Rehearse the full customer journey
Test pages, sign-in, forms, email delivery, uploads and payments where applicable. Check mobile use, certificates, redirects and scheduled jobs. If URLs change, map each old URL to the equivalent new page. Keep the canonical domain and sitemap consistent. A homepage returning HTTP 200 does not prove the rest of the application works.
Assign ownership after cutover
Schedule checks for failed requests, certificate renewal, storage, backups and provider costs. Document the deployment process and the steps needed to restore service. Decide who handles application changes separately from infrastructure incidents. Codescope Solutions can help review dependencies and shape a migration scope around continuity, testing and recovery rather than the server specification alone.
